A unique way to explore Lake Tahoe, and one of its most historic estates, is to cruise a 1950 woody to Thunderbird Lodge. The cruise begins on the east shore, where the captain and crew will offer you a continental breakfast along with a fascinating history of this beautiful area. Once you reach Thunderbird Lodge, you’ll enjoy a walking tour of the estate, including the Thunderbird Yacht (one of the most valuable wood boats in the world), followed by a picnic lunch overlooking one of the most beautiful views you’ll ever see. Looking to save money on your next vacation? Here are a few ways to keep costs down:

1. Cook your own meals.

It’s always fun to explore local cuisine, but an easy way to cut costs is to cook at least some of your meals yourself. Choose easy meals that you’re already familiar with (no need to add stress to your vacation!), or research local speciality shops and get into the spirit of your destination, perhaps by hosting your own Bar-B-Q in Texas or cooking locally sourced seafood in Florida. Call ahead if you’re wondering what kinds of grilling or kitchen items are available (we keep many useful items on hand for our guests, which can be borrowed from the front desk). Slow cookers are one easy way to eat well without too much trouble.

2. Travel off-season. 

If possible, it’s always a great option to travel during less popular times of the year. For example, while summer and winter are extremely popular times to visit Tahoe (and come with long lines and higher prices…) the spring and fall are gorgeous, quieter and much more affordable. Depending on your favorite activities, you may find that travel during less busy times is much more relaxing as well. For Perennial Vacation Club members, travel to our home resorts during their off-seasons comes with 3 extra nights! (Check with the Reservations Department about what weeks apply.)

3. Do some research, and watch for deals.

Pre-planning your trip can often reveal many cost-saving options, whether it’s purchasing tickets to parks or shows in advance, or taking advantage of local happy hours. 4. If you haven’t already, become a member! 

Perennial Vacation Club is a wonderful option for many individuals and families looking to travel yearly at affordable prices. During these unique times, membership in Perennial Vacation Club makes more sense than ever. Here are just a few reasons why:
  1. Our Club is debt-free. Without the burden of mortgages, or debts incurred for furniture or other upgrades, we can weather many storms that others simply can’t. We also remain on the lowest tier of maintenance fees among vacation clubs. How can we do this? As a non-profit club, we don’t have to support developers or larger enterprises, such as Marriott or Disney. We keep our focus on doing what we do best: helping our members create vacations that enrich their lives.
  2. We’ve made excellent use of the current times to deep clean all of our units, inside and out. We’re following all CDC guidelines and requirements closely, and expanding all sanitary and safety measures wherever we can. Our focus includes keys, utensils, light switches… you name it! We’ve also been busy upgrading furniture, remodeling bathrooms and continuing to enhance our Wi-Fi.
  3. Not sure you’re ready to fly? Our three home locations in Daytona, Tahoe and Bandera make car trips easy whether you’re on the east coast, west coast or in the middle of the country. No need to fly or rent a car.
  4. Most of our units offer full kitchens (and the handful of studios offer partial kitchens). All are completely disinfected after every guest departs. If local restaurants aren’t open, or are operating in a limited capacity, this is an easy way to take care of meals (it’s cost effective, too!). We also offer outdoor grills, and the ability to borrow items such as slower cookers from the front desk (disinfected, of course).
  5. All of our locations offer a free lending library of movies and books. We also provide brand-new packs of playing cards (when available). There are lots of options for staying entertained!
  6. Most importantly, we take great pride in our award-winning staff, many of whom have been with us for years (even decades, in some cases).
