Museums in Bandera

The pool at our Bandera resort; a good spot to rest between museum visits

Want to learn more about the Cowboy Capital of the World? Come explore some of Bandera’s museums!

  • Start with the Bandera Natural History Museum, where you can find replicas of dinosaurs and ice age animals on the 8 acre grounds, as well as native Texas plants and art exhibits.
  • The Frontier Times Museum is the oldest in Bandera. This eclectic and eccentric collection honors the history of the American cowboy.
  • Another unusual museum in Bandera is the Town Mountain Miniature Museum. This newer addition to the area offers all kinds of tiny treasures, including many vintage items, and some are for sale in the gift shop.

Autumn in Bandera

Autumn is one of our favorite times to travel to Bandera. Here’s a small sample of the fun events happening in the Cowboy Capital of the World:

  • Boerne Oktoberfest (October 1st): Celebrate Bavarian culture, food… and beer! Held at Boerne’s historical downtown and Olde Town Shopping Center.
  • Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg (October 5th-7th): Held in downtown Fredericksburg, this event celebrates German heritage with music, food, drinks, artisans and more.
  • Texas Hill Country Musicfest (October 13th): Live music in the cowboy capital of the world!
  • Bandera Honors Veterans (November 10th): A parade, music and, of course, more bar-b-que!
  • Ford Holiday River Parade (November 23rd): Come to San Antonio’s River Walk for this special event. Tickets are available here, or free seating is available on a first come basis (bring your own chairs!).
  • Dickens on Main (November 23rd-24th): One of the most-loved events of the season, the 19th Annual Dickens on Main is held in the historical downtown of Boerne. Two days of family fun include a tree lighting ceremony, horse-drawn carriage rides and a chance to start your holiday shopping in the local shops. Don’t miss the concert held Saturday night!

Favorite Restaurants Around Bandera

Texas Hill Country has so much to offer visitors, and so much great food for hungry travelers! Looking for a great burger? Try the Alamo Springs General Store and Cafe, located in Fredericksburg (the onion rings are also a hit).

For something a bit different, try the Friedhelms Bavarian Inn Restaurant and Bar (also located in Fredericksburg). Specializing in authentic German and Bavarian cuisine, this unique location is well-known for its steaks.

Or, if traditional bar-b-que is more to your liking, head to Bill’s Bar-B-Que, the oldest bar-b-que joint in Kerrville. They use Texas-sourced meats and grills that have been seasoned for 40 years.
