Spring in Fredericksburg

While you’re visiting us in Bandera, be sure to check out the sights (and wildflowers) in nearby Fredericksburg. This charming town was founded by German settlers in 1846, and offers all kinds of adventures. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Fredericksburg Nature Center: Explore hiking trails, pollinator gardens and local flora and fauna at this beautiful nature center.
  • National Museum of the Pacific War: Located on Fredericksburg’s Main Street, this 6-acre, 3 museum complex has stunning macro-artifacts and interactive exhibits.
  • Wildflowers: The Texas Hill Country is home to many varieties of wildflowers, including bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrush, Mexican Hat and many more. Find information about what’s blooming and the best places to view them here.
  • Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm (Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site): This farm offers a chance to experience how the pioneers lived! With seasonal activities such as canning, sheep shearing and sausage making, there’s lots to see at this living history farm.
  • Peach Season: Typically running from mid-May through August, peach season offers roadside markets and orchards full of delicious peaches. Fredericksburg is one of the best places to sample peach cobbles, ice cream and more.
  • The Das Peach Has: Food, wine and a beautiful lake surrounded by trees make this a beautiful and peaceful venue to visit.

Start Planning: Autumn in Bandera

Planning a trip this fall? There’s always fun to be had in the Texas Hill Country! Here are a few highlights:

  • Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg (October 2nd-4th): Held in downtown Fredericksburg, this event celebrates German heritage with music, food, drinks, artisans and more.
  • 11th Annual Knights of Columbus Bestfest (October19th): This Fredericksburg fest offers craft beer, an all-you-can-eat speciality sausage meal, dancing and more.
  • Bandera Honors Veterans (November 7th): A parade, music and, of course, bar-b-que!
  • Chamber Light the Night Christmas Parade and Holiday Village of Sharing (December 4th): Fredericksburg is a wonderful place to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season. Come for the lighting of the tree and stick around to meet Santa!
  • Ford Holiday River Parade (November 27th): Come to San Antonio’s River Walk for this special event. Tickets are available here, or free seating is available on a first come basis (bring your own chairs!).
  • Dickens on Main (November 29-30th): One of the most-loved events of the season, the 20th Annual Dickens on Main is held in the historical downtown of Boerne. Two days of family fun include a tree lighting ceremony, horse-drawn carriage rides and a chance to start your holiday shopping in the local shops. Don’t miss the concert held Saturday night!

Re-Opening in the Texas Hill Country!

Ready for an adventure? Here are a few favorite places that are currently open (or soon to re-open) in the Texas Hill Country:

  • Fredericksburg: Visit Fredericksburg has all the details you need for up-to-date information about which businesses are open or re-opening. In general, most businesses, shops, attractions, wineries and restaurants are open, some at a reduced capacity.
  • Boerne: The trails at the Cibolo Nature Center are open (and free!). Bring a picnic and enjoy it by the beautiful creek. All the details you need to plan your trip are here. Or plan a visit to the Turnpike Toy Musuem, which is now open! Admission is only $7 for adults, and $5 for children.
  • San Antonio: The Witte Museum is re-opening on May 30th! Explore exhibits concerning Texas heritage, nature and more.
